about

"Wild, crazed, with heavy dollops of distortion, Franciscan Honey go for a freewheelingly weird journey on the powerful “Invisible and Everlasting”. Everything about this album screams to be played as loudly as possible. Rhythms opt for a driving pace with guitar riffs made perfectly infectious. Lo-fi to its very soul they revel in a raw, gritty sound. Vocals are shouted for the utmost of urgency while the whole of album gets propelled forward in a wonderful, delirious blur. By taking on this specific tact they have a certain degree of intimacy, as the songs feel so alive. At times their fevered frenzy feels like seeing them perform live, for the very aesthetics of their sound goes straight for the heart.

I grew up loving bands like Franciscan Honey. Groups like Guided By Voice’s gleeful abandon run through the album’s very soul. On their more acid-fried takes, they even touch upon the chaotic energy of San Francisco’s Chrome. Nice, messy riffs race through with a feral spirit making sure to devour everything in their path. Vocals have a focused, surreal element to them as they sing from a far off, spaced out distance, at times touching upon a little of Thurston Moore’s most confrontational attitude (i.e. mid to late 80s Sonic Youth). Layer after layer filters into the mix making the whole thing an unrestrained joy.

“Dynamics as Relation” starts things off on a gentle note, embodying an incredibly inspirational moment. Broken keyboards mesh with ramshackle rhythm on the pure ID of “Readapt”. A punk folk emerges on the giddiness of “Stagger”. By far the highlight of the album is the busted regal riffs of “Sheets Of Flame”, whose glowing organ is brought right to the breaking point. Tempos flash forward as the whole thing works itself into something completely unhinged. Really embodying Chrome’s animalistic approach is the intense groove of “No Place For Memory”. So wonderfully heavy is the churn of “The Crystal Merchant”. Truly psychedelic and surreal is the slow-moving melted of “Sunken Bug”. Stripping things down to the essentials is the calming finale of “Cones Again”.

Franciscan Honey represent exactly what rock should be on the powerfully surreal “Invisible and Everlasting”. " - Beach Sloth
